Article 19A PROFILE OF ICHABOD7 BOWERMAN[Ichabod7, Jonathan6 Ichabods5,4, Thomas3,2,1]by Lorna Flint Laughton,
When a son was born to Jonathan I.6 Bowerman and his wife, Susanna Clark, in Hillier Township, Prince Edward County, Upper Canada (Ontario), they decided to name him Ichabod7, after his grandfather and great‑grandfather.F, P This practice of repeating family names seemed to be more than a custom for the Bowerman's... practically a rule (much to the confusion of later researchers). Ichabod's family Bible says that he was born 16 April, 1824.B, J He was the third child and first son, according to the birthdates of his sisters and brothers. His eight siblings were: Eliza Ann7 b. ca 1821, probably died young P Rebecca7, b. ca 1822, m. Townsend G. Terry D, E, N, P, Q Betsey7, b. ca 1827 m. Albert Platt E, F, P, Q As far as is known, Ichabod7 spent his younger days helping his father farm his land (parts of lots 10 and 11, 1st concession, "Lakeside," Hillier Township).A, D He must have attended school or have been taught at home, because his later letters show that he could read and write very well. On 3 Apr 1850 Ichabod7 married Phila Ann Miller at Picton, the largest town in Prince Edward County.I Phila Ann was the daughter of Daniel Miller and Margaret Hubbs. The marriaqe was performed by the Wesleyan Methodist minister Rev. Daniel McMullen, in Picton, the largest town in Prince Edward County I. Phila Ann and Ichabod7 had likely known each other most of their lives. She was born on 4 Dec 1831 on lot 13, Hillier Township (a spot known as Hubb's Creek or Hubbsville) only 2 lots away from the Bowerman's.O In the 1851 census, Ichabod7 and Phila Ann Bowerman were shown living in Hillier Township but the lot or concesssion is not indicated. Ichabod7 was listed as 28 years old and a farmer, while Phila Ann (spelled Fila Ann) was 21. They belonged to a Quaker Meeting, despite their marriage by a Wesleyan Methodist minister.Q Ichabod7 and Phila Ann's children are as follows: Johnathan Ichabod8, b. 16 Jul 1851, d. 25 Jul 1851 John Albert8, b. 9 Jun 1852 [he was always called Albert8, all but legal papers and his cemetery stone list him as John A.] Charles Edgar8, b. 6 Sep 1854 [always called Ed8 or Edgar8 ) but legally listed as Charles E.] Lydia Jane8, b. 25 Oct 1858 B, J During this period, other changes occurred in Ichabod's life. On 6 Sep 1855, his mother, Susanna Clark Bowerman, died.P, Q Three years later, his father, Jonathan I.6 Bowerman, married Hannah Cunningham, widow of John Ferris, and went to live with her at Kingston, taking charge of her farm there.C, L At this time, Jonathan6 divided up his land in Hillier Township between his three sons, Ichabod7, Clark7 and Stephen7.C, O The next event to be recorded in the bible was a sad one. Phila Ann died on 9 Apr 1860 of consumption.B, J, E At 28 Years of age, she was buried in the cemetery near the old Quaker Meeting House in the village of Wellington, only a few miles from their home.G She left her sad husband, Ichabod7, with their children aged 7, 5, and 1½ years. No doubt lonely and overwhelmed with three small children, Ichabod7 soon married again. He chose Phila Ann's sister, Ruth Miller. Ruth was born in Hillier (Hubb's Creek) on 2 Apr 1827, 'the oldest child of Daniel Miller and Margaret Hubbs.B, J, L She had been married to George G. Terry, and had a young son, Daniel J. Terry.Q Ichabod7 and Ruth were married on 24 Sep 1860 by Rev. Elias Williams in Picton.B, F, J When the 1861 census was taken, Ichabod7 was 34 and Ruth was 33. Albert8 was 9 and Ed8 was 6; both were attending school. Lydia8 was not yet 3 years old.E. Ichabod7 called his farm "Maplewood" for the long line of maple trees that lined the drive from the house to the road. A short distance on the other side of the road was Lake Ontario. According to the agricultural census taken in 1861 for the crop year of 1868 Ichabod7 had 98 acres of lot 10, concession 1 [,] Hillier Township, valued at $4000. Of that 98 acres, 78 ac[res] were under cultivation with 43 acres under crop, 34 acres under pasture, 1 acre in orchard and garden and 15 acres wood and wild. His Crops included spring wheat (5 acres/70 bushels), oats (3 acres/100 bushels), buckwheat (7 acres/200 bushels, Indian corn (3 acres/100 bushels), potatoes (1 acre/150 bushels) and hay (10 tons). His livestock consisted of 3 horses, 1 colt, 16 sheep, 4 pigs, 4 heifers and 6 milk cows, for a total value of $545. As well, his farm produced 250 pounds of maple sugar, 100 gallons of cider, 68 pounds of wool, 15 yards of flannel, 150 pounds of butter, 100 pounds of cheese, 1 barrel of beef (200 pounds) and 6 barrels of pork (200 pounds each). And, He had two pleasure carriages valued at $370.E There was no doubt that they were almost entirely self sufficient.C On 14 Dec 1866 Eva MayB Bowerman was born, the only child of Ichabod7 and Ruth.B, J Around this same time, in 1867, Ichabod's father, Jonathan I.6 Bowerman, died.G His widow continued to live in Kingston. The family continued the hard work of farming as the children grew up. Albert8 and Ed8 eventually left school to help their father. When Ichabod's brother, Stephen7, decided to move into Wellington around 1875, Ichabod7 and Clark7 took over his share of the land and work. Stephen7 later moved to Port Arthur, Ontario, then to Monrovia, California in 1885.C Ichabod's family was soon expanding as his children married and produced grandchildren. Albert8 married Annie Herrington ca 1875. Ed8 married Emma L. Benson, the local school teacher, on 1 Feb 1881.R The 1881 census shows newly married Ed8 and Emma living with Ichabod7 and Ruth. Albert8 and Annie, with their son Louis9, were living in another house on the farm.D Lydia Jane8 married Nathaniel Solmes Morden on 7 Sep 1881.J, R Eva May8 married Danford F. Trumpour on 5 Nov 1884. J The four grandchildren of Ichabod7 Bowerman were: Louis Everett9 Bowerman, son of Albert8 and Annie Bowerman, b 8 Jul 1877 in Hillier. Clifford Bowerman Morden, son of Lydia Jane8 and [unreadable, prob. Nathaniel above] Morden, b 8 Aug 1884. Harry Cleveland9 Bowerman, son of Ed8 and Emma Bowerman, b. 26 Oct 1887. Pearl Trumpour, daughter of Eva May8 and Danford Trumpour, b. 15 Aug 1888.J In 1892, Ichabod7 and Ruth undertook a long journey, mostly by train, to Monrovia CA to visit his brother, Stephen7. During their return trip on 29 Mar 1893, on the train near Denver, Ruth suddenly took ill and died.B, J A notice written for the newspapers by Lydia's husband said "The many friends of Mrs. N. S. Morden will be sorry to hear of the death of her mother, Mrs. Ichabod Bowerman, which occurred on the train shortly after leaving Denver, Colorado, on their way home from southern California where the had spent a most delightful winter. The news was a great shock to the family as they had received word that morning saying they would be home in a few days. Her illness was of short duration lasting only an hour." The remains were brought to Wellington for burial.G, K
Again, Ichabod7 was a widower. He did not enjoy living with Ed8, Emma, and Harry9. On 12 Jun 1894, he married Angeline Garrett, a woman he had known in the Quaker Meeting and the widow of Anthony Haight.B, J, M Sadly, Angeline died 3 short years later in 1897.J, N Ichabod's health was deteriorating by this time and he needed care at home. He married Mary Eliza Post, the widow of Harrison King, on 1 Jan 1898, when he was 74 and she was 41.H However, only 6 weeks later, he died, on 16 Feb 1898.B, H, J Ichabod7 Bowerman was buried in Wellington Cemetery with Phila Ann and Ruth.G
