STEPHEN BOWERMAN

[St]ephen (I. or J.) Bowerman, my great-great-great grand father, was born in Canada West (Ontario) approximately 1808, seventh child of Ichabod Bowerman Jr. and Rebecca MastinA. He was a farmer in the St. Vincent Thownship, Grey County of Ontario and married Catherine (Cunningham ?) with whom he had six children B:

 

1. Sarah Jane            b ca 1829

2. Elijah                      b ca 1834

4. Youngs                   b ca 1840

5. Abigail                   b ca 1844

6.  Gideon                  b ca 1846

 

Stephen and his family were members of the Society of Friends (Quakers)B.  Stephen died at the age of 78 years on 5 Apr 1885 at St. Vincent Township, Grey County, OntarioC.

*          Jonathan Bowerman was born in 1838 in Picton, Ontario but spent the better part of his life in Grey County, Ontario. He, like his father, was a FarmerD.  He married Catherine Raven (daughter of William G. Raven and Elizabeth WilcoxE) on 28 Mar 1861 at St. Vincent, Grey County, Province of Canada, in Metho- dist Episcopal ChurchF. Jonathan and Catherine had three childrenG:

3. William Wesley     b 1864                         d 1970 [William Wesley died 1920 not 1970]

 

Jonathan died at the family residence on 13 Jul 1908H on Pleasant View Farm, Guelph Road, West Flamboro, Ontario after living there for about a year. Prior to that, he resided in Hamilton, Ontario for about 10 years. Jonathan was a member of the Rock Chapel Methodist Church and is buried in the Rock Chapel cemeteryI.

Jonathan's wife, Catharine (Raven) Bowerman, died in Swanson, [Sas]katchewan on 14 Sep 1924 at the home of her son Stephen Leroy. She had resided there 3 1/2 years before her death. She is buried in the Swanson CemeteryK.

 

**        Stephen Leroy was born in Meaford, Grey County, Ontario on 2 Jun 1863. He came to Toronto, Ontario with his only brother, William, in 1888 where they engaged in the real estate, banking and brokerage businessL.  There he met and married Rhoda Madden (daughter of Charles Madden and Ellen (Greenwood ?)). They had five children:

In 1910 Stephen took his family west to Saskatchewan where he settled in the Rabbit Foot Lake District near Swanson. He resided there until 1924 taking an active part in all community affairs. He went to Shellbrook, Saskatchewan in 1925 where he resided with his son Edward Leroy at Rayside until his death on 24 Jun 1939M. He was predeceased by his wife Rhoda on 31 May 1921N. They are both buried at the Swanson Cemetery. At the time of Stephen and Rhoda's marriage, he was a member of the Methodist Chruch and she was a Disciple of ChristO. On 25 Jun 1915 they were both baptized into the Reorganized Chruch of Latter Day SaintsP.

***      Edward Leroy was born 2 Jun 1892 in Toronto, York County, Ontario. He came to Saskatchewan in 1910 and homesteaded in the Swanson district. Edward married Laura Rosalee Anderson (daughter of Myron Morrell Anderson and Olive Barnhard) on 9 Dec 1914R on a farm near Vanscoy, Saskatchewan. They emigrated to the US near Andes, Montana but returned to farm in the Rayside [dis]trict in rural Shellbrook, Saskatchewan in 1922 where he [resi]ded until his death on 17 Feb 1977S. Edward served the [Reo]rganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints as an ordained minister. He was also district director of the United Farmers of Canada and was instrumental in the amalgamation of that organization with the Cooperative Commonwealth Federation. Edward was elected to the House of Commons in Ottawa for the federal constituency of Prince Albert, Saskatchewan from 1945 to 1949Q . Edward and Laura had six children:

Laura, my grandmother, lives in a Senior Citizens Lodge in Shellbrook, Saskatchewan and of the age of 89 years is still very active and in good health. [My grandma, Laura, died Aug 20, 1991 (death certificate)]
