Letter of Ichabod Bowerman, 18 Oct 1759, to the Society of Friends, admitting "too much familiarity" with his housekeeper (2nd Wife Jane Richmond) and pleading for forgiveness.

 

To the Monthly Meeting held at the Oblong 18:10th 1759

I the Subscriber having come to a Sight of & Sorrow

for my outgoings & Sorrowful fall that I should 

after my knowledge of the truth give way to the

Enemy so as to let go my watch & Modesty to Use

too much Familiarity with my House Keeper

which Occasioned me to marry her & that - out of

the Unity of Friends.

For my Transgression & Especially the first 

mentioned of Fornication I hereby declare I Hear-

tily condemn it & take the Shame upon my

Self & Confess my Self to be the Transgressor &

my Friend, to be clear of the Cause of the Scandal

I  have brot  on  the Holy Profession of  the Bles-

sed Truth. I Profess confess they Cautioned me 

concerning my Keeping my House keeper which

advice I ought to have Kept but did not as I ought

to have done for which cause I am now a Poor Ob

ject of pity & SHAME which I desire through

Repentance, God may forgive & Friends possilby

& If Friends see it consitant with the Truth

that I may remain under Friends Care.
