Prince Gifford
Moore was born on 1 December 1812 in Falmouth, Barnstable Co., MA, USA. He was the son of
Samuel Moore , Jr. and
Charity Gifford.
Prince Gifford, age 21, married
Charity G. Swift, daughter of
Moses Swift and
Elizabeth (?), on 9 October 1834 in Falmouth, Barnstable Co., MA, USA.
Research Note: Prince Gifford Moore, grandson of Prince Gifford Jr., was brought up by his grandparents fter his mother's death and inherited the house from them. He married Charity Swift of West Falmouth. At the birth of the first of their twelve children in 1835 they added seven rooms to the house, making it look much as it does today. Prince Gifford Moore, a surveyer, carried on his grandfather's and great-grandfather's civic duties and was also Surveyer of Highways, Wood Measurer and became Selectman and Assessor in 1850. A very serious, stern man and farmer (he raised horses and onions) he is remembered mostly for his efforts to improve the Falmouth school system. This house was bought from John Moore in 1967 (BOF 379).
It is noticeable that for a century after the ending of the Revolutionary War in 1789, one of the three selectmen (of West Falmouth, MA) was almost always a Quaker. Some, like Barnabas Bowerman (1838-1850) and Prince G. Moore (1850-1864) served long terms. This informal arrangement continued long after Quakers ceased to constitute a numerically significant minority in Falmouth. One can only Conclude that they were responsible office holders whom their neighbors respected (HOF 439).
