Click the icon to see the headstone of Dorothy located at the Old Town Cemtery, Sandwich, Barnstable Co., MA, New England.

Research Note:  Katherine Hiam, in her 1997 "Burgess Genealogy", Pg. 2, writes that she is "not certain that "Waynes" was actually Dorothy Burgess' maiden name." She references a submission by Benjamin F. Wilbour of Little Compton, Rhode Island, to "Notes" in the New England Historical and Genealogical Register [NEHGR 118:323 (1964)] which read thus: 'The following record from Paver's Marriage Licenses' (in Yorkshire Archeological Journal, Vol. 20, pg. 74, 1909) may pertain to him [Thomas1 Burgess] and suggest the place of his birth: Thomas Burgess and Dorothy Waynes [married at] Tanfield [co. York, England] in 1628.'
She goes on to say: "In spite of the fact that this couple's identity cannot be proved, I have opted to believe that they were "our" Thomas and Dorothy," and further references TAG 61:69 (1985).
To date, I am unaware of any new evidences to support this theory. The General Society of Mayflower Descendants merely lists her as "Dorothy." Although the time frames are correct, further research is required before accepting this information as fact.

Edmund Freeman , Jr. was baptized on 26 November 1620 in Billinghurst, Sussex Co., England.2 He was the son of Edmund Freeman , Sr. and Bennett Hodsoll.1 He lived in Sandwich, Barnstable Co., MA, New England, circa 1646 being an original settler of that town, in the area now known as "Bourndale." He served for seven years as Deputy to the General Court.3
As of 22 April 1646, Edmund was also known as Edmond Freeman , Jr..4
Edmond, age 25, married first, Rebecca Prence, daughter of Thomas Prence and Patience Brewster, on 22 April 1646 at Plymouth Colony, Prob. Eastham, Barnstable Co., MA, New England.4,5
Edmund, age 30, married second, Margaret Perry, daughter of Edmund Perry and Sarah (?), on 18 July 1651 at Sandwich, Barnstable Co., MA, New England, Pg.25 [citing MD 14:109] - "Edmund married second Sandwich 18 July 1651 Margaret Perry, by whom he had six children, Margaret, Edmund, Alice, Rachel, Sarah, and Deborah, not Brewster descendants."6,7
As of circa 1659, Edmund was also known as Emond Freemond (spelling from birth record of daughter, Rachel).
Edmund Freeman , Jr. transferred, by deed, to Joseph Burge, "for fatherly affection unto my son Joseph Burge and my daughter Patience, the wife of Joseph Burge, aforesaid and according to my promise att their marriage Doe give freely one moyetee [sic 'moiety', meaning 'half'] of upland (6 acres) in Sandwich." On 29 April 1674 at Sandwich, Barnstable Co., MA, New England.8,9
After 1682, Edmund was also known as Edmund Freeman , Sr. after the death of his father.10
On 4 March 1696/97, Edmund Freeman , Jr. granted a love and affection Indenture to Edmund Freeman who deeded "all that messuage or Tenniment on which the sd. Edmond Freeman Sr. now dwelleth with all the upland meadow Ground marsh and all other lands of what sort or kinds soever which he hath . . . in the township of Sandwich… with his dwelling House barne and orchards." He reserved for himself the right of use of the dwelling house, barn and old orchard during his natural life and "one halfe part of all the profits and gains whatsoever which shall yearly be made . . . and agreed to pay half of the taxes on the property." Margaret Freeman did not quitclaim on the deed.
At a later date, Edmund Freeman, Sr. required clarification of his action and "was informed that he had given away to his son all that he had, leaving nothing to dispose to his daughters," nor for his own use. After his death, his brother John Freeman, Esq. gave testimony about looking into the matter. John also related that Edmund Sr. had complained about a loan of six pounds made to his son Edmund which the son refused to repay on demand. When questioned, the son acknowledged the loan but maintained the money had been repaid [Tag 40:103-110].11
Edmund Freeman , Jr. died intestate before 5 January 1703/4 in prob. Sandwich, Barnstable Co., MA, New England,, when Ezra Perry was appointed administrator of his estate. The inventory was taken March 1703/4 and was valued at 42 pounds, 14 shillings with all but two items supposedly in the custody of Edmund, the son. It was also designated that the son owed the estate an additional amount of 8 pounds. The son Edmund disputed the accounting, but it must have been upheld by the Barnstable Court, for he appealed the case to the Superior Court on 12 March 1704/5 maintaining the "insufficiency & uncertainty of the allegation therein" and declaring the testimony of his uncle John Freeman, Esq. a "pack of lyes." The case was decided against Edmund Freeman.12
Division of estate for Edmund dated 9 June 1705 at Sandwich, Barnstable Co., MA, New England, The final distribution of the estate named Edmund Freeman, Isaac Pope and Alice his wife, Richard Allen of Sandwich, John Fish and Margaret his wife, John Launders and Rachel his wife, Patience Burg, widow, and Ezra Perry and Rebecca his wife.13

Elder William Brewster was born circa 1566 in prob. Doncaster, Yorkshire, England.1,2,3,4,5 He was the son of William Brewster and Mary Smythe. On 3 December 1580, he enrolled at Peterhouse, Cambridge University at England however, he did not graduate.6,7 William was employed between 1584 and 1587 at England and Holland as an assistant to Sir William Davison, who in 1585 went to the Low Countries (Holland, etc.).8,9 William was employed between 1590 and 1607 at Scrooby, Nottinghamshire, England, as "Post" or postmaster, responsible for the relays of horses on the post road.10,11
William married Mary (?) circa 1593 in Scrooby, Nottinghamshire, England, [Date based on birth of first child].12

Research Note:  The name of Mary Wentworth has been proposed for the wife of Wiliam Brewster. Articles published in TAG 41:1-5, 63; MQ 36:55-57, and NEHGR 124:250-254, confirm that additional research must be done before accepting this surname as a fact. In addition, a privately published pamphlet by John G. Hunt, "Of Mary Brewster, Wife of Wiliam Brewster of the Mayflower, from Plymouth, England to New Plymouth, New England" (1985), suggests that William Brewsters wife was named Mary Wyrall of Loversall, near Doncaster. This has yet to be proved. [Source: MFIP-Brewster:5 (Note a)]
He and Mary (?) emigrated in 1608 from Scrooby, Nottinghamshire, England, Leydon, Holland, where "he became elder and teacher of their church at Leydon."13
Between 1608 and 1620, William was employed or working as a teaching English and from 1616-1619, was a partner of the printer, Thomas Brewer. They secretly printed, for sale in England, books which were banned by the English Government at Leydon, Holland.8,14 William made an affidavit on 25 June 1609 at Leydon, Holland, of declaration before the magistrates of Leydon, Holland, in which "William Brewster of St. Ursualsteeg, Englishman, aged 42 years, Mary Brewster, his wife, aged 40 years, and their son Jonathan Brewster, aged 16 years" acknowledged reciept of cloths from Bernard Rosse of Amsterdam, Englishman - thus establishing their approximate dates of birth.15 He and Mary (?) emigrated in 1620 from Leydon, Holland, to Plymouth, New England on the ship Mayflower, and founded Plymouth Plantation.13,16,17 He lived at Plymouth, Plymouth Co., MA, New England, between 1620 and 1632.18 He lived at Duxbury, Plymouth Co., MA, New England, between 1632 and 1637.19
Elder William Brewster was on a list of freemen dated 1633 in Plymouth Colony, Plymouth, MA, New England.20
Elder William Brewster was appointed in 1636 at Plymouth, Plymouth Co., MA, New England, as Deputy to the General Court.21
Elder William Brewster died on 10 April 1644 in Duxbury, Plymouth Co., MA, New England,, [BFH states Place of Death as Duxbury; Col. Clergy shows death date as 16 Apr 1644].22,23 Letters of adminstration on the estate of Mr. Willliam Brewster, late of Plymouth, gentleman, deceased, were granted to Jonathan and Love Brewster. On 5 June 1644 in Plymouth, Plymouth Co., MA, New England, In the settlement of the estate by the "onely two sonnes surviveing," [Plymouth Colony Deeds I:198 (Jonathan and Love Brewster)] the estate was divided in half between Jonathan and Love Brewster and jonathan was directed to pay Love "for the dyett of Isaack Allerton, a grandchild of the said William, which he had placed with his sonn Love to table..."24

Research Note: He was the ruling "elder" on the Mayflower and at Plymouth in New England.25,26
