Research Note: Melatiah settled in Lafayetteville, town of Milan, formed in 1818 from part of the town of Northeast, Dutchess Co., NY and built a house there where the hotel later stood and is the ancestor of the Milan Bowerman's.5 Melatiah Bowman appeared on the federal census of 1820 in Milan, Dutchess, NY, USA.
Melatiah Bowman died on 15 April 1827 in Milan, Dutchess Co., NY, USA,, at the age of 62 years "died intestate."

"The petition of Rhoba Bowman (widow of Maltiah Bowman) of the town of Milan in Said County Respectfully sheweth, that Maltiah Bowman late of the town of Milan in the county of Dutchess, deceased, died in the Town of Milan in the county of Dutchess on or about the 15 day of April 1827; that at or immediately preceding the time of his death, he was an inhabitant of said county of Dutchess; that the deceased has left no last will and testament...
And your petitioner further shows that all the goods, chattels and credits of the said deceased do not exceed in value the sum of fifteen hundred dollars...
Know all men by these presents, that we, Rhoba Bowman, Joseph A. Bowman & Nicholas White all of the town of Milan in Dutchess County are held... in the sum of three thousand dollars... to be paid to the said people... dated 29 day of January... 1828.
