     Charles H. Briggs died on 31 March 1974 in Barnstable County Hospital, Pocasset, Barnstable Co., MA, USA,, at the age of 78 years, 8 months and 28 days.2
     The obituary of Charles H. Briggs, of The Wareham Courier, Wareham, Plymouth Co., MA, USA, dated 3 April 1974 reads: Charles. H. Briggs, Sr., 78, died Sunday, March 31 [1974] at Barnstable County Hospital, Pocasset where he had been a patient for two weeks. He lived most recently at 15 Arlington St., Middleboro, where he had been a resident for two years. Formerly, he had resided in Taunton and Wareham.

Husband of the late Gertrude A. (Brownell) Briggs, he had been retired for 18 years from the Bay State Piping Co. of Rochester

Mr. Briggs was the son of the late George and Jennie Briggs. He attended Wareham schools and was a Navy veteran of World War II.

He is survived by one son, Charles H. Briggs, Jr. of East Wareham, one daughter, Mrs. Elsie Westgate of Wareham, eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren, two brothers, Frederick Briggs of North Falmouth and Lester Briggs of Middleboro, several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be geld on Wednesday, April 3 at the Cornwell Memorial Chapel at 2 pm. Burial will be at Center Cemetery in Wareham.

     Hannah M. Briggs was born on 13 December 1825 in Rochester, Plymouth Co., MA, USA.1,4,5 She was the daughter of Elisha Hammond Briggs and Mary W. Bolles.2,3

     Research Note:  Several things concern me about this marriage:

In the 1860 Federal Census for Wareham, Plymouth Co., MA., A Hannah "B." Bumpus, age 27, does appear in the household of Ebenezer Bumpus, as does a son, George E., age 2 years.
In the 1870 Federal Census, for the same location, Hannah "B.," once again appears, with George, now 12.

Inconsistencies exist in this data:

Hannah M. Briggs, dau. of Elisha and Mary (Bolles) Briggs, was b. in Rochester 13 DEC 1825. This is found in the original records located at Rochester, as well as the published Vital Records.
Her son, George E. Briggs, was b. in Marion 23 Feb 1858, also found in the original records, however no record of the father is to be found and he is not named in the original record of birth.

In 1860, Hannah M. Briggs would or SHOULD have been near 35 years of age. Almost 45 in 1870.
Hannah and Ebenezer were not married until almost two years after George Briggs' birth [17 DEC 1859]
The age for George is correct, although he is identified as a son of Ebenezer, with the Bumpus surname, instead of a step-son surnamed Briggs.
To support this, George E. "Bumpus" again appears in the 1880 Federal Census, age 22, as a boarder in the home of a Thomas Rogers.
Hannah Briggs' son, George E. Briggs is known to have married Jenny Bumpus, daughter of Ebenezer's Brother, James, 3 DEC 1887 in Wareham.
It should also be noted that the marriage record of George Briggs and Jenny Bumpas does not list the name of his father.

It is interesting to note however, that in the census of 1860 and 1870, This family lived within four houses of Jenny Bumpus' parents - if this is indeed George Briggs, it would explain how he met Jenny. It would also make them first cousins.

At this point in time, I feel more research into this is required and that the marriage, with regard to the identification of "Hannah B.", should be questioned. I have copies of all pertinant records discussed above if anyone has any questions.

If anyone can shed light on this, please contact me!

UPDATE: Examination of Rochester and Marion Vital Records reveals that a Hannah "J." Briggs, Daughter of Mary Ann Briggs, married Ebenezer E. Bumpas, s. of Willard and Clarissa Bumpas, were married on Dec 17th 1859.

     Hannah M. Briggs died on 11 May 1906 in Wareham, Plymouth, MA, USA,, at the age of 80 years, 4 months and 28 days.

     Seth Briggs and wife Lucy, grantors, to Nathan Briggs, grantee, a piece of Sedge Cove Neck salt marsh "which fell to me from my father, Samuel Briggs" [recorded 1820] on 27 February 1797 at Plymouth Co., MA, New England.11
     Nathan Briggs died on 18 June 1798 in Wareham, Plymouth Co., MA, USA,, at the age of 81 years, 8 months and 28 days.12 His estate was probated on 9 November 1798 at Wareham, Plymouth Co., MA, USA, naming his w.
