John
Dillingham was born on 14 November 1710 in Sandwich, Barnstable Co., MA, New England.
1 He was the son of
Edward Dillingham and
Abigail Nye.
Research Note: Several sources have indicated a death date of of 27 Oct 1825 for John Dillingham. This is based on earlier research (1918) and the following citation: "From the Town of Sandwich, Affidavit of S. E. Silsby, Curator, from Records of Old Burying Ground, dated Sandwich, Jan'y 29th, 1918. Mr. John Dillingham, died Oct 27, 1825, aged 90 years."
Simple math shows us that this is an obvious error as John was b. 1710 and a d. date of 1825 would place him at 115 years of age. While not impossible, I find this highly unlikely.
Examination of the "Vital Records of Sandwich, Massachusetts to 1885", Volume 2, pages 1522-1523 [Dillingham], produced the following records, taken from a 1907 inventory of the Old Burying Ground in Sandwich, by the Sandwich Historical Society:
"John B. died Aug. 18, 1865, aged 71 Years" [his wife, Abigail, is listed below him (d. Nov. 17, 1851, ae. 54 years]
"John, died Sep. 2, 1828, aged 83 years"
"Mr. John, died Oct. 27, 1825, aged 90 years"
"Mr. John, died Oct. 20, 1797, in his 88th year"
The birthdates of the above would be, respectively, 1794, 1745, 1735, and 1709. As John's birth date is positively known, the 1797 death date would be accurate, falling approximately one month short of John's 88th birthday. John Dillingham died on 20 October 1797 in Sandwich, Barnstable Co., MA, New England,, at the age of 86 years, 11 months and 6 days (See Research Note Below).
2 He was buried after 20 October 1797 at Old Burying Ground, Grove Street, Sandwich, Barnstable Co., MA, New England.
