The surname of this "Syselia" is unknown and could possibly suggest some form of a connection between the two. Further information regarding "Syselia" will be provided at a later date, strictly for research material regarding Joseph Burge of Sandwich.

The stones of the immigrant and his wife were restored by descendants in 1917, and so are marvelously legible (2003). Slightly uphill from those of her parents are the stones of Elizabeth and Ezra, both of which appear to be original; these too, thankfully, are legible. The cemetery is situated almost directly across the mill pond from the Thornton9 W. Burgess (Jr.) Museum.
         The tombstone reads as follows:

  • Bio: This narrative was written by Katherine W. Hiams and printed in 1997:

"Thomas, the immigrant, is sometimes thought to have come to Salem, Massachusetts, with his wife, Dorothy, and his young family in 1630. A stone set by the grave of John5 Burgess, Jr. [John4, Joseph3, John2, Thomas1] in Center Cemetery, Rochester, reads, 'Descendant of Thomas Burgess the pilgrim who landed at Salem 1630.' The marker is clearly newer than the gravestone still standing, but I have no idea who put the more recent stone in place, or when. To the best of my knowledge, there is no record of Thomas' arrival at Salem or any other record of him or his family before 1637. Then, a land record dated July 3, 1637 shows that he forfeited acreage assigned him at Duxbury, in order to settle the same year at Sandwich. There, he and his family lived at the western end of town, which later became a part of the township of Bourne, in the area now called Sagamore. He became a large landowner in Sandwich and served the town in may capacities (Burgess,9).13

Dorothy (?)

F, #2861, d. 27 February 1687
  • Marriage*: Dorothy married Thomas Burge , Sr. before 1639 at Prob. England.
  • Death*: Dorothy (?) died on 27 February 1687.1
  • Burial*: She was buried after 27 February 1687 at Old Town Cemetery, Sandwich, Barnstable Co., MA, New England.
  • Married Name: As of before 1639, her married name was Dorothy Burge.
  • Married Name: Her married name was Dorothy Burges.
  • Tombstone*: Tombstone of Dorothy, Old Town Cemtery, Sandwich, Barnstable Co., MA, New England.
  • Research Notes*: Research Note:  Katherine Hiam, in her 1997 "Burgess Genealogy", Pg. 2, writes that she is "not certain that "Waynes" was actually Dorothy Burgess' maiden name." She references a submission by Benjamin F. Wilbour of Little Compton, Rhode Island, to "Notes" in the New England Historical and Genealogical Register [NEHGR 118:323 (1964)] which read thus: 'The following record from Paver's Marriage Licenses' (in Yorkshire Archeological Journal, Vol. 20, pg. 74, 1909) may pertain to him [Thomas1 Burgess] and suggest the place of his birth: Thomas Burgess and Dorothy Waynes [married at] Tanfield [co. York, England] in 1628.'
She goes on to say: "In spite of the fact that this couple's identity cannot be proved, I have opted to believe that they were "our" Thomas and Dorothy," and further references TAG 61:69 (1985).
To date, I am unaware of any new evidences to support this theory. The General Society of Mayflower Descendants merely lists her as "Dorothy." Although the time frames are correct, further research is required before accepting this information as fact.

The inventory was taken March 1703/4 and was valued at 42 pounds, 14 shillings with all but two items supposedly in the custody of Edmund, the son. It was also designated that the son owed the estate an additional amount of 8 pounds. The son Edmund disputed the accounting, but it must have been upheld by the Barnstable Court, for he appealed the case to the Superior Court on 12 March 1704/5 maintaining the "insufficiency & uncertainty of the allegation therein" and declaring the testimony of his uncle John Freeman, Esq. a "pack of lyes." The case was decided against Edmund Freeman.7

  • Name Variation: After 1682, Edmund was also known as Edmund Freeman , Sr. after the death of his father.12
  • Indenture*: On 4 March 1696/97, Edmund Freeman , Jr. granted a love and affection Indenture to Edmund Freeman who deeded "all that messuage or Tenniment on which the sd. Edmond Freeman Sr. now dwelleth with all the upland meadow Ground marsh and all other lands of what sort or kinds soever which he hath . . . in the township of Sandwich… with his dwelling House barne and orchards." He reserved for himself the right of use of the dwelling house, barn and old orchard during his natural life and "one halfe part of all the profits and gains whatsoever which shall yearly be made . . . and agreed to pay half of the taxes on the property." Margaret Freeman did not quitclaim on the deed.
At a later date, Edmund Freeman, Sr. required clarification of his action and "was informed that he had given away to his son all that he had, leaving nothing to dispose to his daughters," nor for his own use. After his death, his brother John Freeman, Esq. gave testimony about looking into the matter. John also related that Edmund Sr. had complained about a loan of six pounds made to his son Edmund which the son refused to repay on demand. When questioned, the son acknowledged the loan but maintained the money had been repaid [Tag 40:103-110].13
