- Obit*: Obituary of Deborah Bowerman Thorne, appearing in the September 13, 1910 edition of the Juniata [NE] Herald, pg. 4:
Deborah Bowerman was born in Otsego county, New York, February 21, 1816. At the age of four years she moved with her parents, Seth and Mary Bowerman, to Chenango county, and then afterwards to Caledonia, Livingston county, New York. Here she was united in marriage to William B. Thorne on March 29, 1838. Shortly after their marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Thorne moved to Barry county, Michigan, were they lived 9 years, then moved to Jackson county, where they lived until coming to Adams county, Nebraska, in 1872. Two sons were born of this union both of whom are left behind to mourn the death of their mother, together with a niece, Mrs. Dr. Ackley, who was adopted by them in early childhood. Mr. and Mrs. Thorne journeyed together in life's pilgrimage for over fifty years. He came to his death by an accident near Bladen on November 27, 1888. Since that time Mrs. Thorne has made her home chiefly among the children. She died at Juniata, Nebraska, September 7, 1910, at the ripe old age of 94 years, 6 months and 16 days.
Mrs. Thorne was a good woman, and exemplified the graces and virtues in her daily life which she received through the training in early childhood of the Society of Friends. Those who knew her testify to the faithful life which she lived, and to her saving faith in Christ.
The funeral services which were held September 10, at the home of Dr. W. Ackley, in Juniata, were conducted by the Rev. O. C. Carden of the Methodist Church, after which the remains were taken to Bladen, where the interment was made beside her husband.
------------
We desire to express our appreciation to all who offered help and sympathy, to the many friends and the W.R.C. and O.E.S. for beautiful flowers. We shall also long remember the sweet voices of Mrs. Sabie Dool and Miss Alta McCracken as they sang "Beautiful Isle of Somewhere," "Go Bury Thy Sorrow," and "Rock of Ages.: May all be blest with many friends and willing hands in time of need is the wish of LeGrand and William Thorne, Dr. and Mrs. Florence Ackley.2 - Obit: Obituary of Deborah Bowerman Thorne, September 16, 1910, Bladen [NE] Enterprise, pg. 1:
Grandma Thorne died at the home of Mrs. Dr. Ackley in Juniata, where she for many years past has made her home, Wednesday, September 7. She had been failing the past year. Her death was due to old age, she being past ninety. Funeral services were held at Juniata last Sunday morning at ten o'clock and the remains were brought to the home of her son, W. E. Thorne of this place, where a short service was conducted before departing for the cemetery. The remains now rest in Plainview cemetery beside her husband who preceeded her many years ago. She formerly resided in Bladen where she has many friends who mourn her departure and whose sympathy is extended to the members of the family in the hour of sorrow. We hope to have a more extended obituary of Grandma Thorne in our next issue. [The next issue of the Bladen Enterprise is missing from the archives of the Adams Co., NE, Historical Society.]7

- Obit*: The obituary of William B Thorne, of Bladen, Webster Co., NE, USA, dated after 27 November 1888 reads: (Obituary of William B. Thorne.) Bladen (NE) Enterprise--Sad Memoriam.
The sudden death of W. B. Thorne, of Bladen, of which a mere notice was given last week from a dispatch announcing his funeral, has cast a deep gloom upon many a household. The circumstances are substantially these: On Tuesday, Nov 27th, about 2 o'clock p.m., Mr. Thorne went with a hired man to a straw stack on his farm, and began loading straw upon the wagon, he being on the load. A part of the stack sliding frightened the team into a run, and Mr. T. reached to grab the lines. Just then the forward wheel dropped diagonally into a dead-furrow, causing a sudden lurch forward and sideways, throwing him to the ground, the wheel passing over the base of the skull causing instant death. A hole was pierced also in his temple, supposed to be caused by striking upon a bolt in the rack. The hired man ran to him immediately but found that life had already gone. His two sons, living a mile distant, were hurriedly summoned, and all done that was possible by the distressed relatives and a grief stricken community. The funeral was held on Wednesday, Nov. 28th, at his late residence, a sermon being preached by Rev. O. A. Buzzell, of this place, from the text "Therefore be ye also ready." The entire neighborhood were in attendance, also many from Juniata, Blue Hill, and other towns. The members of the G. A. R. Post at Bladen, to whom the deceased had been a warm friend and ready helper, were in attendance and led the procession as an escort to the place selected for burial in the garden of his son William. A very large procession followed and turned away sorrowfully when the earth had covered the remains of their true and valued friend. A man of more genuine noble qualities, honest and upright in his dealings, generous and kind to the needy, conscientious and true to his political and religious convictions, tender and living in his family, could not be found. Truthfully of him it may be said: "None knew him but to love him." Mr. Thorne was born in Schoharie county, N. Y., June 26, 1815, and at death was aged 73 years, 5 months and 1 day. He was married March 29, 1838 to Miss Deborah Bowerman, who after more than fifty years of happy and contented companionship, is now left to mourn the loss of one of the kindest of husbands. This union was blessed by the birth of two children, sons, LeGrand and William, whose kind attention will be a source of comfort to their grief-stricken mother. They had celebrated their golden wedding last March, by a family reunion. A niece - now Mrs. Dr. Ackley - was adopted by them in early childhood, and found a pleasant home. He leaves also four brothers and one sister still living, only one of whom - a brother, being present at the funeral. Immediately after marriage they settled in Barry county, Mich., when that country was new, and after nine years removed to Jackson Co., same state, from whence they removed to Neb., in the summer of 1872. Being among the first settlers in Adams county, he identified himself with every honorable scheme for the moral and intellectual improvement of her rapidly increasing population, subscribing largely toward the erection and maintaining of our churches without respect to denominational lines. In the dark days of the grasshopper scourge his hand, name or purse was never denied towards helping the worthy needy in opening up their farms, furnishing seed, and building houses. In this and every other way he proved himself everybody's friend. If a fault could be found in him at all, it was always on the side of mercy, in placing too much confidence in his fellowmen. During three successive terms - 6 years - he served the county as treasurer, and his memory will be honored now he is among us no more. His early training was under the influence of the "Society of Friends" -- his parents uniting with the Baptists in later years, and the principles thus instilled could be traced through every period of his life. His residence for the last few years was on a farm in the edge of Webster county, upon which the buildings, groves, fences, stock and poultry gave token of his kind and diligent attention to secure the comfort of the brute creation, as well as the happiness of man. He rests from his labors and his memory is hallowed. O.A.B---.5 - Obit: The obituary of William B Thorne, dated 29 November 1888 reads: (Obituary of William B. Thorne.) Juniata [NE] Herald, Tuesday, November 29, 1888 [pg. 3]: Accidental Death -- The startling news of the accidental death of W. B. Thorne, of Bladen, was received here yesterday morning. Mr. Throne was hauling a load of straw when the team ran away, throwing him off the load and injuring him so severely as to cause death in a short time. Mr. Thorne was one of the oldest residents of this county and well and favorably known to almost every citizen. His generous qualities and kind heartedness had won all for his friends. No words that we can write could add to the respect which all gave him as his due, and his sudden death will draw tears of sorrow from many an eye. A good man has gone, indeed. Among those who attended the funeral from here, yesterday, were D. H. Freeman, S. L. Brass, W. B. Cushning and Geo. T. Brown.5
