  • Obit*: The obituary of Legrand Benjamin Thorne, dated after 2 August 1926 reads:
Death Claims A Respected Pioneer -- Legrand B. Thorne of Horton Laid To Rest Thursday Afternoon, Masons Officiating
Legrand B. Thorne reached the River Monday afternoon at four o'clock and passed over into the eternal life at the age of eighty-three years. There survive five daughters: Mrs. Mable [sic] Fowler, Mrs. Laura Mitchell, Mrs. Mattie Pritchard of Cheyenne, Wyoming, Miss Nettie Thorne and Mrs. Lucille Kellicut and one brother, William of Bladen, Nebraska. Deceased was a man of energy and thrift, a public spirited, grand old gentleman. On matters that pertained to the welfare of the community, Mr. Thorne was always ready to assist. If Mr. Thorne did not approve of a thing he never hesitated about saying so. People admired him for his frankness. He put more money into the three buildings on Peerless Square than any other citizen. For this one thing his memory will linger when the selfish citizen has sunk into oblivion. It is nice to so live that others aside from one's family, feel sad when death calls.
The funeral was held at the home Thursday afternoon at 3 o'clock under the auspices of the F. & A. M., Rev. Shuman Griffith officiating. Beautiful flowers decked the elegant casket, a symbol of affection. The funeral cortege wended its way to the cemetery, that sweet bower of rest, as the sun was sinking in the golden West. The casket bearing all that was mortal of the beloved, slowly sank into the tomb beneath the weeping birch for the last long sleep. C.1

(Obituary of Mary A. Boulton Thorne)
THE ENTERPRISE -- H. Ludlow, Publisher -- BLADEN, NEBRASKA
    Departed this Life.

The sudden death of Mrs. L. B. Thorne removes from our midst a lady whose rare qualities and many virtues endeared her to everyone who had the good fortune to claim her friendship. It is needless to state that the entire sympathy and heartfelt condolence of the citizens of Bladen and surrounding country for many miles is tendered to Mr. Thorne and his sorrowing young family in their deep affliction; for truly it may be said that there is no vacancy in the domestic circle of life which is so hopelessly irreparable as the loss of such an excellent model of maternity. We doubt, in fact if even in the brightest moments of domestic glory and contentment any individual living amongst us today could picture to himself such a counterpart of maternal love as that which combined to form a happy home which only can be attributed to the graceful presence and cherished example of such a genuine mother, aided by a kind hearted husband who is everything conceivable in the constitution of an exceptionally good citizen. Never perhaps, in the history of our little city has such a practical proof of sympathy, condolence, respect and esteem been witnessed as that which surrounded, in the midst of piercing coldness, the remains at the Baptist church and on the way to Plainview cemetery. But alas! What is sympathy or what are dirges in comparison to the broken link in the domestic sphere and in our own social circle-a bridge which could only be spanned by the happy presence and genuine friendship of that lady whose early demise we all so sincerely mourn.
The deceased was the daughter of John and Mary Ann Boulton and was born near Hancock, Michigan, on January 25, 1863, just completing her 32d year; having died on February 5, 1895 at 1:30 a.m. She was married to Mr. L. B. Thorne on December 25, 1881 and was mother of three little girls-Laura, aged 12 years, Nettie 10 and baby (Lucille) 2-1/2 years, the two former being bright and intelligent children, while the baby is an interesting cherub and will no doubt prove an object of material consolation to its father and sisters in their sad bereavement. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. E. H. Chapin, pastor of the Universalist church at Lincoln. He delivered a very touching, literary and philosophical oration which was remarkable for finely appropriate similitude and contained many splendid sentiments of logical reasoning, profound knowledge in theological study and betraying, at the same time, the fact that the learned pastor possessed very high gifts of oratorical excellence. That portion of his discourse which treated of the further world and the immortality of the soul was truly magnificent and we doubt if any of the famous German philosophers could have conceived more beautiful ideas of sound logical reasoning. It was full of pathos, all of which, at the same time, were characterized by strongly figurative language which plainly indicated that our own lives should be guided exclusively by the three main semaphores of life-Faith, Hope and Charity.2
