Ichabod
Bowerman was born circa 1721 This birth and relationship are not proven.
3,4 [
UPDATE: This relationship has now been proven by the use of DNA Testing. We are waiting on the completion of documentation for one of the test lines before releasing this data.] He was the son of
Thomas Bowerman and
Jane Clefton.
1,2 Ichabod married first,
Lydia Mott circa 1744 reportedly in MA, however this has not been proven.
5 It has also been reported that Ichabod may have married a
Lydia Petty in Monmouth, NJ, New England, on 18 October 1744, further research is required before this can be accepted as a fact, however (See Research Note below).
6 Research Note: A review of local Massachusetts records has never produced any record of the marriage between Ichabod and Lydia Mott, nor has any record been found for Lydia's birth or parentage. Secondary sources have indicated that they married and raised 6 children in Massachusetts.
In the marriage records of New Jersey [Nelson, William. Documents Relating to the Colonial History of the State of New Jersey: Vol. XXII, Marriage Records 1665-1800. Patterson, NJ: Press Printing and Publishing, 1900, Pg. 30,312] the following record appears: "[Pg 30] Bowman, Ichabod, Monmouth, and Lydia Petty, Monmouth 1744 Oct. 18; [Pg 312] Petty, Lydia, Monmouth, and Ichabod Bowrman, Monmouth 1744 Oct. 18"
We find this marriage occuring the same year that Ichabod and Lydia Mott were to have married (1744), in a place where known associates of the Bowerman family were located. It has been recently submitted, based on this record, that Ichabod Bowerman actually married Lydia Petty [Pettit] and NOT Lydia Mott, and is now widely accepted.
Frank Dougherty, in his "Settlers of the Beekman Patent", Vol. 6, has released this data as "fact", in an update to his original genealogy in Volume 2.
It should be noted that while there is strong "circumstantial" evidence to suggest this, it has NOT been proven. It has not been established that Ichabod was ever in the Monmouth, NJ area. Until evidence arises that this is the same man of Dutchess County, it cannot be accepted as fact.
Further research is mandated, however!
UPDATE At this time, exhaustive research into the history and movement of families known to be in close relation to the Bowerman family, is ongoing by members of this website. So far, we have determined that William Gifford, along with others, are known to have purchased lands in Monmouth, NJ., thus making it theoretically possible that Ichabod would have had business, or reason, for being in the Monmouth area at this time. More research is ongoing, but watch here for updates! Ichabod Bowerman removed to Verbank Village in the Beekman Patent, Dutchess, NY circa 1746.
7 He lived on 1 May 1747 [Signed lease agreement; click on links for image and transcription].

As of 1 May 1759, Ichabod was also known as Ichabod Boorman [1759 Bond List].
9 He was on a list dated 1 May 1759 at Lot 16, Verbank, Dutchess Co., NY, New England, of those in rent arrears;
[See BP I:67-77 for a good description of Leases and Rent systems in the Beekman Patent]. He is shown as having 140 acres, an annual rent of 13 bushels, and that his arrearage at this time was only for 2 fowls, and 1 days "riding."
9 Ichabod married second,
Jane Richmond, age 24, daughter of
Cyrus Richmond and
Phebe Mott, on 17 November 1759. He was on a list dated 1761 in Oswego Monthly Meeting, Dutchess Co., NY, New England, compiled by the Oblong Monthly Meeting entitled "
List of the Heads of Families" of the various meetings. The name of Ichabod Bowerman appears as being "at Oswego."
10 Ichabod Bowerman removed to Oswego, Dutchess, NY by 1761. He was on a list dated 30 April 1772 at Beekman Patent, Dutchess Co., NY, New England, for "Rent Wheat" having been collected and stored by Richard Davis, for "Colonel Beekman 1772." The entry for Ichabod shows that 15 bushels had been collected in rent payments [See citation for additional notes].
11 He was on a list dated July 1775 in Beekman, Dutchess Co., NY, New England, of those that refused to sign the "Articles of Association", along with 132 others [See research note below].
12 Research Note: Doherty [BP 1:412-413] give us the following: " The earliest source of conflict in Beekman was the requirement to sign the Articles of Association by every male resident 16 to 60. This pledge was required by the County Committee of Safety in July 1775. Soon after many men actively took part in both the Whig or Patriot, (for independence), and Loyalist or Tory, (for remaining loyal to the King), causes.
In May of 1775 the Provincial Congress adopted a pledge which they asked each colonist to sign and a Committee for Safety was instituted for each town. The men in Beekman were asked to sign in July and we list them below in the order that signed the lists... Unfortunately, the lists for Pawling have not survived and we can only rely on the militia records and the minutes of the meetings of the ConC [Continental Congress] to determine if an individual was a Whig or a Tory. It should be noted that many men who signed the Association later became Tories and went to Canada, and a number of men who originally refused to sign later fought the British." [A transcription of this pledge will be posted on the website]. He was appointed on 2 April 1776 at Beekman Precinct, Dutchess Co., NY, New England, as a "Path Master" at a Beekman Precinct Meeting, along with 34 others [
[the various precincts all appointed men to work on the roads and maintain them, calling them "Path Masters" or "Road Overseers"].13] He was appointed on 2 April 1782 at Beekman Precinct, Dutchess Co., NY, New England, as an "Officer of the Highways" at a Beekman Precinct Meeting.
14 He was appointed on April 1783 at Beekman Precinct, Dutchess Co., NY, New England, as an "Path Master" at a Beekman Precinct Meeting.
15 He was on a list entitled "
A list of bonds due 1st May 1785"; In an entry dated 29 Dec 81 [date bond was taken], Ichabod appears as owing £40, for a £35/18 debt (almost all bond amounts were larger than the original bonds) on 1 May 1785 at Lot 16, Verbank, Dutchess Co., NY, New England.
16 As of 29 December 1785, Ichabod was also known as Ichabod Borman [Bond List].
16 He left a will dated 4 February 1790.
17
Ichabod Bowerman died between 4 February 1790 and 1 March 1790. His estate was probated on 1 March 1790. Click here for a transcription of Ichabod's Will.
Research Note: BFH 135 attributes AMOS and VINCENT as being the children of Ichabod Bowerman:
* AMOS (DJB 203)
* VINCENT (ibid).
Ichabod Bowerman’s will does not mention the last two children listed above, although PLBQ names them. Vincent Bowerman (son of Thomas IV) speaks of “Uncle Amos” in his 1870 “Some Account of the Events of my Father.” But it is not clear whether this is a brother of Vincent’s father or of his stepmother. Most likely Vincent’s reference is to Amos Bull Jr., brother of Maturah Bull (see DJB). It is our assumption that the PLBQ references to Amos and Vincent Bowerman, sons of Ichabod are most likely in error. Our hypothesis is that PLBQ’s Amos and Vincent should both be deleted since they have previously been listed as sons of Thomas IV (PLBQ 121). Thomas’ son Vincent was born 21 May 1791 (MYW 21), and his son Amos was born 20 August 1806 (MYW 21). We assume PLBQ’s “Vincent” is Thomas IV’s eldest son, since no other source lists Vincent as a son of Ichabod. We assume “Amos” is Thomas youngest son, since no other source lists Amos as a son of Ichabod.
PLBQ is thus in error at this point, as it is on numerous other points. For example, a similar mix up of generations occurs under PLBQ’s listing of Israel Bowerman (135). There, listed under “(7) Judah Bowerman, m. Miss Bull; set. Simcoe” is “Issue: (a) Joseph F. Bowerman m. Abigail L. Davis.” However, this Joseph is the son of Israel Bowerman, who had twelve children (Israel, Judah, Benjamin, Elisabeth, Catharine, Phoebe, Pritchard, Mary, James, Joseph, Franklin, Millicent). The actual children of Israel are: Sarah, Anne, Phoebe, Joseph, Mary, Laura, and Judah, which match up with the supposed kids of Judah m. Miss Bull (PLBQ p. 135). Thus, PLBQ top of p. 135 should read: “See XVI The Israel Bowerman Branch: (a) Joseph F. Bowerman” [but he is apparently listed out of order. He should probably be #4].
Moreover, neither this, nor the additional two children attributed to Ichabod and Jane are the strangest errors in PLBQ. On p. 136 we find Judah Bowerman, son of Ichabod and Jane Bowerman with issue daughter Abigail, who marries 1st., Mrs. Ferguson, and second, Mrs. Palmer, set. Michigan.
