     Freeman Bowerman was born on 3 January 1841 in Hallowell Township, Prince Edward Co., Ontario Province, Canada. He was the son of Josiah Bowerman and Sarah Brewer. He immigrated in 1859 from Canada, USA.
Freeman Bowerman began military service on 11 August 1862 at DeKalb, IL, USA, Civil War - Enlisted in the 105th Regiment, Illinois Infantry Volunteers, Company K. The 105th was formed in July and August of 1862 and was sent to Camp Dixon on 29 Aug 1862, to organize. The regiment mustered into service on 2 Sep 1862 with 954 men.¹
Freeman Bowerman mustered out of service from Company K as a Private. Discharge records him as being of Milan, IL. On 7 June 1865.²
     Freeman, age 27, married Evaline F. Sherman, age 18, on 16 November 1868 in DeKalb Co., IL, USA, This record can be found at the County Court Records located at Sycamore, IL. He lived in Spring Valley, Monona, IA, USA, on 11 July 1870 Next door to his father, Josiah.
     In the 1870 U.S. Federal Census, taken at Spring Valley, in Monona Co., IA., on 11 July 1870, Freeman Bowerman appeared as Head of Household, 29 years of age, occupation listed as a farmer. He was born in Canada, as was his father and neighbor, Josiah. His mother was born in NY.. Also appearing was his wife, Evaline F. Sherman, listed as "Eva", age 19, who was born in NY. Also appearing in the home, was Ernest Anson Bowerman, son, 11 months old and born in Iowa in Oct [this conflicts with birth of Nov].³
     In the 1880 U.S. Federal Census, taken at LaPorte, in Wayne Co., IA., on 8 June 1880, Freeman Bowerman appears as the Head of Household. A white male, 39 years of age, whose occupation was listed as a farmer. He was born in Canada, as were both parents. Also appearing was his wife, Evaline F. Sherman, listed as "Eva", age 29. She and her parents were all born in NY. Also appearing in the home, was Ernest Anson Bowerman, son, 10 years of age and born in Iowa, attending school; Edna Annis Bowerman, daughter, age 8, born in Iowa; Eugene Nelson Bowerman, son, age 6, born in Iowa; Charles Custer Bowerman, son, age 3, born in Iowa.⁴
Freeman Bowerman was enumerated in the1890 Veterans Schedules in 1890 at Blair, Washington Co., NB, USA.⁵
On 12 October 1891,Freeman Bowerman applied for Pension due to a severe fracture of the skull, caused by a kick from a mule.
     In the 1900 U.S. Federal Census, taken at Blair, in Washington Co., NB., on 2 June 1900, Freeman Bowerman as Head of Household, white male, born January of 1841 in Canada. He was 59 years of age and had been married for 31 years. His father was born in Canada, his mother in NY. He immigrated to the U.S. in 1859 and had resided here for 41 years. He was not naturalized at this time. He was able to read, write and speak English. The house was rented.. Also appearing was his wife, Evaline F. Sherman, wife, a white female born in NY in November of 1852, listed as having had 8 children, with 7 surviving. Also appearing in the home, was Lucretia Laura Bowerman, daughter, listed as "Cretie", 18 years of age, born in Nebraska in March 1882; Fay Freeman Bowerman, son, 12 years of age, born in Nebraska in March of 1888; Lester Sherman Bowerman, son, 9 years of age, born in Nebraska in March of 1891. All children were at school and able to read, write, and speak English.⁶
Freeman Bowerman was naturalized in 1915 at Omaha, Douglas Co., NB, USA.⁷
     In the 1920 U.S. Federal Census, taken at Omaha, in Douglas Co., NB., on 1 June 1920, Freeman Bowerman appears as the Head of Household (F. Bowerman) who owned his home although mortgaged. He was a white male, 79 years of age, and immigrated to the U.S in 1857, where he was naturalized in 1915. He was able to read and write, and was unemployed. He was born in Canada as was his father and his mother was born in NY.. Also in the house was his wife, Evaline F. Sherman, shown as a white female, 69 years of age, able to read and write. She was born in NY, as were her parents.. Also appearing in the home, was Charles Custer Bowerman, son, recorded as "C.C.", who was a white male, 43 years of age, single, and employed as a Railroad Engineer. He was born in Iowa; Fay Freeman Bowerman, son, recorded as "F.F.", who was a white male, 33 years of age, single, and employed as a carpenter. He was born in Nebraska; Lester Sherman Bowerman, son, recorded as "L.S.", who was a white male, 28 years of age, single, and employed as a carpenter. He was born in Nebraska.⁷
     Freeman Bowerman died on 18 June 1925 in Omaha, NE, USA,, at the age of 84 years, 5 months and 15 days.
